THE CON TRILOGY – FISHAMBLE FEEDBACK

I am delighted to say that I have received some critical feedback on some of my writing.  Once again it is from Fishamble, the New Play Company and once again, I am delighted to receive it and the time taken to review it is much appreciated. Fishamble are an award-winning Irish theatre company that specialises in producing new plays. Based in Dublin, Fishamble is known for its commitment to developing and showcasing contemporary Irish writing and supporting playwrights at all stages of their careers.  Although they themselves will not be pursuing it as a project, I hope it will once again give my writing some invaluable exposure

The Play critiqued this time is called “The Con Trilogy” which is a novel and epic play where three one-act plays that can be performed individually are combined to make a single three-act full length play. The central theme throughout the three plays is people needing to hide their true character for either good or bad reasons.

The first play, “The Cast”, is set in a small theatre dressing room as an amateur dramatic group prepares to perform a one-act play in a drama competition.

The second play is that one-act that they perform and is called “The Cheat”.  This is set in the office of a devious businessman.

The third play is called “The Catch” and is once again set in the drama group dressing room.  It tells the story of the aftermath of the amateur groups’ performance.

All three plays are full of twists and excitement as the plots unfold, and the true characters are revealed.  The “Con” Trilogy caters for a large casts size where some actors will get the opportunity to play multiple personalities and take on the challenge of multiple personas with a single epic play.  Some characters play across more than one play/Act.

Total Characters –           14 Male               –              9 Female

FEEDBACK

THE CON TRILOGY is a story of a defeated group of newfound thespians navigating putting on their performance without a director and after their driving-force convict producer, John King, gets arrested before the curtain rises. Told by a large ensemble, the group faces adversity of inner challenges on performing through the nerves and a life-and-death situation involving a mysterious drug deal after their play is completed. During their play, “The Cheat,” the brutality between a scandalous Managing Director and employees, in acts of sexual assault and fraud, mirrors the injustice and triumph within the ensemble’s reality when the competing producer, Max Burke, unleashes the drug exchange and his true role as drug dealer. Once the police arrive, we learn that John is not a devoted producer, nor a conman, but an undercover operative with the drug squad, using the drama group as a cover to orchestrate the bust. The push and pull of trust between the characters and their relationships to their own gut feelings is laden with consistent tension as a motif, causing the audience to question who exactly they should believe. Comedic lines of dialogue bring a spark to the characters, one that is felt especially through Maria and Knocker. The use of the inner play performance seems justified in its role as a foil to the ensemble’s circumstances and reference to how “escapism is the greatest form of reality.”

In terms of further development, you could consider building up to or expanding John’s moments of revelations of existence on and off-stage in tandem with the universe, such as when he mentions the greater producer in control of things and points to the sky in the ending. Further, adding a more solid explanation as to why the drug dealers chose to exchange in the dressing room and not somewhere more secluded may help the audience fully understand the context and stakes. You might also explore having more speculation within the ensemble on how their performance went or their future goals of performing during the clash with the drug dealers, or circle back when the conflict is resolved. We wish you the very best as you move forward with this work.

FISHAMBLE FEEDBACK

Feedback from renowned expertise is always welcome. Especially when it is reasonably positive. Of course there is always a need for some constructive criticism. Without it, nothing is learned.

I am delighted to say that I recently received some critical feedback on two of my plays recently from Fishamble, the New Play Company. Fishamble are an award-winning Irish theatre company that specialises in producing new plays. Based in Dublin, Fishamble is known for its commitment to developing and showcasing contemporary Irish writing and supporting playwrights at all stages of their careers.  I am very appreciative of their feedback and the time taken to critique my work, including the advice on how to bring these projects further and create an enhanced audience experience.

Below are some positive extracts of the feedback on the plays. Christmas Reunion and Doubts And Desires. I would love if some drama group would like to take these plays to the next stage with me and we can work together to develop them using the advice provided. Please reach out to me using the contact form or email, if your drama group would like the challenge of working with to premiere either of these plays in conjunction with myself, the author.

CHRISTMAS REUNION

Christmas Reunion is a gripping dark thriller set during Christmas, blending crime, love, betrayal, and justice. It follows John Forde, wrongfully convicted of murdering three women, as he escapes custody with his brother’s help and uncovers the true killer, Luke. Meanwhile, John’s ex-lover Jennifer struggles with eviction and the vengeful actions of her ex, Kenneth, a former detective. The play explores themes of wrongful conviction, love’s destructive power, and the search for redemption, offering a dark twist on the traditional Christmas story. With its strong character development, suspenseful plot, and emotional depth, the play keeps audiences engaged, leaving them reflecting on justice, betrayal, and the scars left by obsession.

DOUBTS AND DESIRES

Doubts and Desires explores themes of faith, personal choice, and the complexities of human emotions through the struggles of Cathy, Steve, Nicola, and Father Peters. Cathy questions her calling due to her emotional connection with Steve, while Father Peters grapples with his past and moral responsibilities. The play’s strength lies in its fully developed characters and authentic dialogue, allowing audiences to connect deeply with their internal conflicts. The integration of original music adds emotional depth, enhancing the storytelling and atmosphere. By addressing the tension between faith, doubt, and desire, this piece invites reflection on life’s complexities, leaving a lasting impression.

LOVE IN LOCKDOWN LIVE!!

I feel I should be shouting that title, like a commentator on Sky Sports before a match.   Love in Lockdown… Live!!!

Yes, it has been a while since I added to this blog, so with the live performance of Love in Lockdown which features my own play “Power Of Love” due to be performed at the Home Rule Club in Kilkenny from the 5th to the 7th May (8pm), what better time to throw a few words together and ask for your support.  The live performance has been a long time in the planning, but it is finally almost upon us.  Tickets are available at Eventbrite Love in Lockdown: LIVE Tickets, Thu 5 May 2022 at 20:00 | Eventbrite  Get your tickets early. You won’t be sorry. It will be one of four plays on the night.

The live version has a new director in Dubliner, Ger Blanch who has previously worked with Fishamble.  Paul McManus from Carlow Little Theatre reprises his role as Sammy. He is joined by another Carlow Little Theatre actor Michelle Phelan, both fresh from performances in Juno and The Paycock. Everyone is really buzzing and again huge thanks to Philip Hardy and Barnstorm Theatre Arts for the production. They have been amazing.

I would also like to thank KATS theatre group who recently did a reading of another of my plays called the “The Sub” at John Cleeres in Kilkenny as part of their Scriptease program.  The play is based around the other favourite pastime of my life, the GAA and tells the story of a match from the perspective of one of the substitutes.  Hopefully, this play too can be brought to life on the stage sometime down the road. Massive thanks to Delia Lowery, Hugh Keenan and all those involved in the reading from KATS.

With the lockdowns finished (for now at least) it’s really a busy time with the arts, the GAA and making sure I relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of life that I did enjoy during lockdowns.  Time has become challenging again, but I am determined to control as much as possible and take those breaks away to savour life and the world. I hope you are too.

POWER OF LOVE

Is there light at the end of the tunnel? Will lockdowns finally end? Everyone has tried to find ways to get through these challenging times.  I have returned to writing fiction in various forms and more comprehensively. The end product of one such project will be streamed live this Thursday 29th April at 7:30pm on Zoom.  (Details at the end of this blog)

I have been lucky that a short play of mine has been produced by the Kilkenny based Barnstorm Theatre Company.  The theme is “Love In Lockdown” and my play is called “Power of Love”.  It is a project that started in the latter quarter of 2020 and the approximately 15-minute duologue is part of ten similarly selected and diverse writings to be performed. The first five of which were streamed in March. They had originally been planned to be performed on St. Valentines week.  Unfortunately, restrictions played havoc with that plan.

Filming took place on Saturday and went very well considering all but one rehearsal took place over Zoom/Teams and it is a single camera to give a theatre feel. It’s a wonderful idea to bring theatre to people given that people cannot go to the theatre. So, if you are looking for something novel to pass the lockdown time, please use the link to the live streaming. It will also be available on the Barnstorm Theatre Company YouTube channel afterwards if you miss the live performance on Zoom. There are also plans to broadcast on radio and do live performances when restrictions lift. Hopefully you will enjoy it and I look forward to your reactions and reviews on here afterwards.

I would like to thank the Barnstorm Theatre Company for the opportunity. No script is complete until it has been interpreted in real life. It has been a very gratifying experience.  Special thanks to Philip Hardy, Cara Doherty and Maeve Ingoldsby for their invaluable advice and experience during the script writing phase. A lot has been learned.  I would like to thank Trish Brennan of the Barn Owl Players who directed it brilliantly and maintained the integrity of the story I was telling whilst also making it an entertaining piece of theatre.  Also, thanks to two brilliant Carlow based actors, Carrie Doran and Paul McManus who brought the characters to life with great understanding and enthusiasm whilst overcoming the challenges of the new way of doing things.

I am genuinely excited about this and look forward to audience reaction, good or bad. I describe it as a romantic comedy with a dark side, but it could be a dark comedy with a romantic side. It’s open to interpretation.  The story is about Ella and Sammy who are two Gardai based in Kilkenny that have history. However, time is running out for Ella and things need to be said. Their long-time attraction to each other has been blighted by obstacles and fears of social etiquette, loyalty and age difference. Dramatic and potentially catastrophic circumstances put them together in a situation where only the truth matters. Are they literally sitting on a timebomb that will destroy their lives forever or will there be enough time to connect?

FIRST ANNIVERSARY – CHRISTMAS REUNION

The website is one year old today! As members of the smallest author fan club in the world I’d like to take the opportunity to thank you for looking at the website and its content at least once in the past year. Thank You.

Due to the special day that is in it and the festive period that is coming, I’m relaunching the full length play script called “Christmas Reunion” CHRISTMAS REUNION

The play was first launched in 1997 (21 years ago!), but is one that has never been performed. Set between 1985 and 1995, it may bring back some nostalgic moments for some and raise emotions for other in what I’d like to think is a festive thriller. What better for the festive season than some chocolate and a drink of your choice with some tissues next to you reading and weeping (hopefully for the right reason). Then add in some mystery and maybe some happy moments and you have a typical Christmas classic. I hope you can stay awake until the end but don’t tell me what happens at the end!! I like the suspense.

Unfortunately on the downside to manage costs of the website, I have to increase the fan club membership fee by 10%. You can all do the math on what you paid this year yourself.  Next year I’m hoping to grow the social media following and maybe even my Mother might follow me if she gets broadband in the new year! (Doubtful!). It would be great to get a following on my social media platforms but more important have people read my works and spread the word and share works. Welcome to any publishers. Please like and share my content.

Feliz Navidad
